Sometimes it's the little things, isn't it, that can make or break a day? Like the week after my hysterectomy when all I seemed to do was drop and break things. After two, not one but two, jars of broken baby food and a dash to the store to buy something I later realized I already owned I decided it was time to clean out this cupboard. This is the cupboard where all the baby and toddler food is stored along with the pasta and crackers. Which, at least to me, are also kid type foods. That's my theory behind my organizing any way.
This is what I was dealing with. And, believe me, it's usually way worse than this. Stuff is always falling out because the "if you shut it quickly and forget it" method only keeps things contained until you open the door again.
This cupboard is usually stuffed to the rafters with stuff. This was actually a good day and yet jars are still tumbling out.
I started by pulling everything out, wiping down the shelves and thinking about how and what I used. Since baby food is the thing I'm reaching for most, followed closely by toddler snacks, I decided these need to be organized and easy to reach. I was also storing extra jarred food in a bottom cupboard so I pulled that up as well.
Because I find myself digging through all of the jars every mealtime trying to find something specific, I decided I would organize the baby food by the way I actually use it. I know. I'm embarrassed that this technically my fourth baby and it's taken this long to get a system in place. In my defense, I don't think I was terribly bothered by the chaos in the past but I'm getting old. And tired of broken or lost jars. Bring on the label maker. Best. Gift. Ever. (Thanks, Emily!!)
I used the little wire shelf that was already in place and lined up by categories. I went with meat and veggies on the top and fruit, vegetables, mixed veggies, and the foods I'd purchased but hadn't introduced yet. Those are now filed under "soon".
The second shelf holds those little cereal snacks that I use in the car and other toddler snacks that didn't fit on the first shelf, including the crackers. I left the pasta where it was and just tidied it up.
And the top shelf holds the extras. It's been over a week and it's still working for us. Yay! No more broken jars or spending on things we already have.
I can't believe such a simple change makes such a big difference. And it only took me four kids to get there.
